I switched over to a Nokia 8800 (not the piece of shit 8801 available in the U.S.) and I had forgotten how clumsy the series 40 platform was. Unlike usual, there was a lot of reluctance to adopt this phone when it was first unveiled and it wasn’t even the price tag that made me hesitant. It’s not like I can’t afford to dish out a grand for a phone, but I couldn’t get over the GUI and lack of features. Last week, I finally relented and grabbed one just for the hell of it… it feels solid. The phone itself is also quite heavy but not in a negative way, in a way almost as if it reassures you that it’s sturdy and durable. Battery life is a major problem, I find myself swapping between batteries throughout the day.
Aesthetically, it’s very catchy and eye pleasing. Simple curves, stainless steel (brushed matte-like finish for front and rear cover) and a design devoid of any child-like gimmicks found in lower series models elevates the 8800 among the best Nokia has offered (e.g. other 8XXX series). Memory isn’t expandable, which really isn’t that much of a problem since you’ve got a lackluster half megapixel camera. I like it more than the SE K750 but that’s probably because it’s new and different. Next week, the Sony Ericsson K800 should arrive… hmmm, this is getting kind of expensive
