I want to discuss something different this entry, like most of the garbage I write, it is unrelated to anything I’ve posted previously. On a clear Tuesday morning at 11:10 AM on April 20th, 1999, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold arrived at Columbine High School with improvised explosive devices and several firearms. I don’t want to go over the details of the massacre, body count, etc. that stuff you can do on your own. However, this event was brought up for a specific reason which I’ll get to – you impatient prick. We are finding ourselves in increasingly more vulnerable and dangerous times, completely unaware of when and where the hazards are at each turn of the corner. Sometimes it’s simply overwhelming how much threat is out there, especially with heightened awareness after the coordinated terrorist attacks of September 11 (9.11.2001).
Directly following those attacks, important hubs such as Penn Station and Grand Central Terminal had National Guards stationed with assault rifles. This air of caution was frowned upon by many New Yorkers and even in the face of such serious tones, many decried the National Guards holding such extreme firearms. A year later, no one openly condemned the National Guards there… who carried no firearms and only possessed walkie talkies. Perhaps the sophistication inherent in the commuters there and being reminded that there are those who want to do us harm was just too much to bear. Now, onto my point…
Our enemies carry guns. They have access to bombs, which they conceal and will not hesitate to use. Now, why on earth are our enemies armed to the teeth, while we disapprove of arming those who help defend us and give us a fighting chance? A handheld radio unfortunately will not subdue or hinder our enemies from harming us. We’re taking weapons from our defenders, for what reason… because it’s unsightly? give me a break. How do we cope with unexpected challenges under prepared.
There is no type of child, no profile, that would fit the description of a student that shoots up his school. This uncertaintly must be unsettling to parents who send their children to what they think is a safe environment to get an education. Unfortunately, though I’m not entirely sure, I’ll bet we can’t sweep/pat down every child, search every bag, etc. because of civil liberties (I’d assume). So, maybe we can institute some kind of voluntary program where a teacher can be armed, anonymously, if they so choose. This way, at least your child will have a chance at survival. The problem I see with this is, how are we to know if those teachers are mentally healthy, sane, etc. How do we arm children or teachers with a way to protect themselves against revealing last second enemies? This is one of many cascading errors, that compound on top of one another. Anyways, I’d like to know… is there a solution? what do you think?
