  • Larry... I mean, Lana Wachowski

Larry Wachowski is going by a new name these days: Lana. The Hollywood director, who helmed the “Matrix” franchise with his brother Andy, is transitioning from male to female. She made her sassy debut in a gray dress and pink dreadlocks in a promo for the siblings’ new movie, “Cloud Atlas.”

Larry Lana Wachowski. I guess the Oracle didn't even see that one coming...

  • Disclaimer: I didn't really have a chance to organize some of these thoughts, so there are points where they are a little disjointed. Just writing down an initial reaction, that's all.

It has been a while since I've ranted about anything, so I figure I'm about due. They say the beginning is the very best place to begin but I have little interest in stirring a conversation spanning across multiple blogs. I rarely have time to update let alone visit random blogs but something caught my eye recently. While I'm not feverishly checking everyone out, I am occasionally aware of what occurs out there. That was one phenomenon that did not escape me.

Although I'm typically quite indifferent to peoples' appearance, their shallow action/reaction to statements made upon what is observable tells us something rather more. It forces me to believe that, while their actions are morally wrong... society has also become schizophrenic about being hypersensitive and indifferent. Lets rush through the facts, because parroting verbatim is pointless:

    • Owner expresses harmful statement based on his observation during hiring process.
    • Person is offended; friend of victim unknowingly soldiers on with interview.
    • Offended person rages online; Xanga community rally with her.
    • Apparently, owner looks like something out of Wes Craven's imagination.

What the owner said was definitely distasteful, hypocritical and pretty much in line with hegemonic masculine hierarchy. People seem oddly delusional that during the hiring process, there exists meritocracy. That the best person always gets the job based on hard work, perseverance and general competence. Given that most people want to hire exceptionally good looking people when given the choice, her situation presumes atypicality amongst the online crowd. It gives it that edge that creates movement. Suddenly, everyone shares her disgust - they too, by extension of agreement, are offended. Pitchforks and mobilization of an army are just days away I heard. Threat of verbal nuclear war imminent!

Oh please, we've all made statements like that. At the very least, we've thought it... which is pretty much the same thing (I'm sure you'll disagree, but we can save that for another day). What I find really humorous, is that they say what a hypocrite the owner is. How can someone who conjures up images of the elephant man, be so vocal! They throw him to the mob. People defend the victim and violently criticize the owner.

In all the drama, they become blind to how hypocritical they have become. The abuse they're ridiculing... they're dishing back out. Suddenly, he's a douche. An asshole. His looks matter. He's a prick. A dumbass. Etc. No one says a word because the mob has one belief... and no one likes being ostracized outside the mob. Their own hypocrisy has created a blindness that's kept hidden in plain sight. Individuals hop online, exasperated, assembling for a common purpose because this must have come out of nowhere. Only it wasn't out of nowhere. Its always been there. Shove a spotlight onto it so it can structure how we see, what we see, and how we make sense of what we see, that led to it being overlooked for so long until it can seize the opportunity to be finally recognized.

Any perception of discrimination, is generally in fact, discrimination. There is no tiptoeing. However, if you're going to be up in arms over it, call them a hypocrite and then proceed to do the same exactly what they've done... then I'm not certain your message is very clear. Evidently, the mob can point out flaws in an individual but cannot look in the mirror and see their own; nor would they care to.

I also don't understand the trivial statements of generalities that people make in regards to internet anonymity. No shit you don't know me and I don't know you. Does that really need to be said? really, are you serious? my god, no way! That's awesome, lets go talk about it later. Oh, you're busy later? well, go to hell.
