7th Annual Eric Wong Thanksgiving Alumni Classic
(Even though this is a recent tradition, only on its seventh year, it is a tradition nonetheless.)
It’s that time of year again. The 7th annual Wong Thanksgiving Alumni Classic will be held this Thursday, November 22nd at an undisclosed location, bring your A game and leave your shit talking at home cause we playing for real now. Best bring your bib… because it’s going to get messy.
Place: TBA.
Time: TBA, The 22nd of November, Thursday, Thanksgiving
Why: Because I seriously doubt any one of us will be cooking dinner.
Anyway, it’s a tradition. Hoop it up in the morning, grub it up in the evening.
You know how to get in touch.
Originally, I wanted to put up a couple of images in this entry but it turned out to be much more trouble than it’s worth. So no images.
Jason vs. Hao
My prediction: Jason barely squeeks out a victory… 21-17
My pre-game analysis: Jason will be complacent. I think both of them can hold themselves to a higher standard. However, both being out of practice and out of shape, I expect a win out of desperation instead of convincing fashion. Jason has shown brief glimpses of what made him dominant during the 90s… however, age, lack of practice and a unhealthy lifestyle seem to have caught up with him. His short and mid-range game was never great to begin with but it was passable at the very least. His bread and butter has always been his perimeter game – long range shots with reckless abandon since that seems to be his only weapon worth loading. To be successful, Jason will need to be spot on with his outside shot. Even being off a little bit will take his whole game out of sync. If his accuracy is decent, then he should be unfazed for most of the game. My biggest concern, apart from him not hitting open shots early on would be his handle. It is likely he’ll try to do too much too soon, resulting in turnovers and just plain sloppy play.
Hao will most likely fire blanks as his disastrous offense allowed me to coin him as “HAD” or “HA_” since he has Defense… but you’ll never know when or if the O will show up. Priding himself with tenacious D, he seems a little overly reliant on his youth and athleticism – which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but doesn’t always translate into success in the form of blocks. If Hao can keep himself from being winded and lackadaisical on both offense and defense, then this could be a short game as Jason has no answer for the forementioned youth and athleticism. Unconventional shooting form and never having really been a basketball player make his shot very erratic. There won’t be any flashes of brilliance here since his effectiveness is in a slower paced, grind it out, I’m-going-to-make-you-fatigued style of play. To win, he’ll need to create opportunities on defense by forcing turnovers and converting those into easy buckets on offense (such as a layup). Air tight defense or it’ll be a long day for Hao.
The matchup between these two, ahem, juggernauts, won’t be as onesided as them facing me in counterstrike but it should be entertaining nonetheless. Experience wins out over youth.
Jason’s prediction: 21-6
Hao’s prediction: N/A (I asked but he declined to give one).
The winner will play against me. Not that I’m a superior player or anything (though I am) but to make sure those two play each other while they’re fresh thus eliminating excuses.
[Insert winner] vs. Eric
My prediction: 21 to… ummm, can points be taken away?
My pre-game analysis: As the fastest, strongest, most accurate and toughest opponent they’ll face, it’s not likely they’ll escape out of this game without some type of embarassment. Entering into this series with confidence rivaling that of the Burj Dubai towers in height, its foundation is further padded by a recent win over Hao earlier in the year and many, many wins over Jason throughout the course of time. Injuries may have hampered my ability to completely dominate on both sides of the ball… however, with age comes wisdom. I’ve learned to pick my spots when to ‘turn it up’ and when to pace myself. Having played both players, I already have an idea as to what they’re capable of and their tendencies… as no doubt they’ve had a taste of mine in their losses. The key thing I’ll have to remember is to stay fundamentally sound since over confidence/arrogance and a penchant for enjoying humiliation might come back to bite me in the form of a humbling loss. With so much killer instinct that I need to check it at the gate at Logan, all I gotta say is… get your popcorn ready.
One thing you can be assured of, every second I’ll bring the same intensity… I’ll compete as if the loser gets drowned in Michael Vick’s pool.
