7th Annual Eric Wong Thanksgiving Alumni Classic

(Even though this is a recent tradition, only on its seventh year, it is a tradition nonetheless.)
It’s that time of year again. The 7th annual Wong Thanksgiving Alumni Classic will be held this Thursday, November 22nd at an undisclosed location, bring your A game and leave your shit talking at home cause we playing for real now. Best bring your bib… because it’s going to get messy.

    Place: TBA.
Time: TBA, The 22nd of November, Thursday, Thanksgiving
Why: Because I seriously doubt any one of us will be cooking dinner.

Anyway, it’s a tradition. Hoop it up in the morning, grub it up in the evening.

You know how to get in touch.

Originally, I wanted to put up a couple of images in this entry but it turned out to be much more trouble than it’s worth. So no images.

    Jason vs. Hao
My prediction: Jason barely squeeks out a victory… 21-17
My pre-game analysis: Jason will be complacent. I think both of them can hold themselves to a higher standard. However, both being out of practice and out of shape, I expect a win out of desperation instead of convincing fashion. Jason has shown brief glimpses of what made him dominant during the 90s… however, age, lack of practice and a unhealthy lifestyle seem to have caught up with him. His short and mid-range game was never great to begin with but it was passable at the very least. His bread and butter has always been his perimeter game – long range shots with reckless abandon since that seems to be his only weapon worth loading. To be successful, Jason will need to be spot on with his outside shot. Even being off a little bit will take his whole game out of sync. If his accuracy is decent, then he should be unfazed for most of the game. My biggest concern, apart from him not hitting open shots early on would be his handle. It is likely he’ll try to do too much too soon, resulting in turnovers and just plain sloppy play.

Hao will most likely fire blanks as his disastrous offense allowed me to coin him as “HAD” or “HA_” since he has Defense… but you’ll never know when or if the O will show up. Priding himself with tenacious D, he seems a little overly reliant on his youth and athleticism – which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but doesn’t always translate into success in the form of blocks. If Hao can keep himself from being winded and lackadaisical on both offense and defense, then this could be a short game as Jason has no answer for the forementioned youth and athleticism. Unconventional shooting form and never having really been a basketball player make his shot very erratic. There won’t be any flashes of brilliance here since his effectiveness is in a slower paced, grind it out, I’m-going-to-make-you-fatigued style of play. To win, he’ll need to create opportunities on defense by forcing turnovers and converting those into easy buckets on offense (such as a layup). Air tight defense or it’ll be a long day for Hao.

The matchup between these two, ahem, juggernauts, won’t be as onesided as them facing me in counterstrike but it should be entertaining nonetheless. Experience wins out over youth.

    Jason’s prediction: 21-6
Hao’s prediction: N/A (I asked but he declined to give one).

The winner will play against me. Not that I’m a superior player or anything (though I am) but to make sure those two play each other while they’re fresh thus eliminating excuses.

    [Insert winner] vs. Eric
My prediction: 21 to… ummm, can points be taken away?
My pre-game analysis: As the fastest, strongest, most accurate and toughest opponent they’ll face, it’s not likely they’ll escape out of this game without some type of embarassment. Entering into this series with confidence rivaling that of the Burj Dubai towers in height, its foundation is further padded by a recent win over Hao earlier in the year and many, many wins over Jason throughout the course of time. Injuries may have hampered my ability to completely dominate on both sides of the ball… however, with age comes wisdom. I’ve learned to pick my spots when to ‘turn it up’ and when to pace myself. Having played both players, I already have an idea as to what they’re capable of and their tendencies… as no doubt they’ve had a taste of mine in their losses. The key thing I’ll have to remember is to stay fundamentally sound since over confidence/arrogance and a penchant for enjoying humiliation might come back to bite me in the form of a humbling loss. With so much killer instinct that I need to check it at the gate at Logan, all I gotta say is… get your popcorn ready.

One thing you can be assured of, every second I’ll bring the same intensity… I’ll compete as if the loser gets drowned in Michael Vick’s pool.

May 14th, 2007 – when I beat Hao in Basketball.

I saw ‘Knocked Up’ recently and I expected a comedy where I’d be laughing my ass off the whole time. Instead, it was humorous for the first 15 minutes… then the horror begins. Maybe the real mature adult themes of pregnancy and “Oh. my. god. What do I do, blah, blah, blah” is just too awkward and shifts the movie from comedy to chick flick

Translation: I’m all like bzzzzzz and ptchow and everyone at the gym was like whaaaa! then they go kaplowie and everyone’s like arghhhh and I’m all like kitten killing y’know, because I haxxxxor jim duggan awesome… time to change pants.

    Another jab at God.

A thought experiment into the postulation of the nature of existence. The basic premise is that there was an omnipotent and omniscient God who through having these qualities had no challenges at all in life; he knew what would happen next, could cause what happened next and whenever he deviated an action he already knew the next one. Due to the nature of his existence the only challenge left for God would be to destroy himself.

Now personally I have a problem with the whole omnipotence and omniscience values as both are impossible via logic if you follow this. In order for someone to be omniscient they must know everything possible in time, even their own destruction, and their whole existence would be futile as they would know their every move and action. Omnipotence is easily disqualified with the following paradox:

“Can God create a rock that is too heavy for him to lift?”

If he does he’s not omnipotent if he doesn’t he’s not omnipotent. Anyway my point was to show that I believe it would be more correct to say he is as omnipotent and omniscient as logically possible, but it is a thought experiment after all.

So the basic idea is that everything that encompasses the entire Universe is God, he destroyed himself spreading his material into miniscule portions and is now reforming. If you run by Descartes theory that in any chemical reaction no substance can be created only reconfigured, then it fits in perfectly as nothing is created really in this universe, just reconfigured from other atoms so it seems completely plausible to me.

The theory that the universe is continually expanding and then will eventually start shrinking also fits effectively with God exploding to expand space, and then as he reforms the matter reforming causes the universe to shrink.

Finally, it even fits in with Plato’s theory of knowledge in that we live in order to gain as much knowledge as possible, reincarnate and learn again, until we know the absolute of all knowledge and live on the plane of forms and ideas. The forms or ideas could simply relate to the existence God before he decided to swallow a grenade, but it is relevant.

The only real question to me is maybe God destroyed himself not as a challenge but for an actual purpose, this can only be theorised of course as the motivation for it would be unknown but it makes you wonder that if that theory is true then what would cause such a drastic action of destruction in order to reassimilate?

The plus is it also takes the religious perspective out of God, which is always good.

Do NOT watch this if you believe in God – this is something for us atheists, non-believers, heretics, etc. to laugh at.

P2P sites ridicule MediaDefender takedown notices in wake of e-mail leak
    Published: September 19, 2007 – 10:27AM CT

Peer-to-peer (P2P) poisoning company MediaDefender has sent a flurry of takedown notices and legal threats to P2P web sites that are facilitating the propagation of a 700MB archive of internal MediaDefender e-mail that was leaked onto the Internet this week. The e-mails, which were obtained by a group that calls itself MediaDefender-Defenders, reveal that the company attempted to deceive the public after the disclosure of its affiliation with the MiiVi site and was providing information about file-sharing network users to the New York State Attorney General’s office.

MediaDefender is now in damage control mode and hopes to slow the spread of the e-mails by intimidating P2P site operators. MediaDefender is represented by Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton (SMR&H), which is recognized one of the top law firms in the United States. The P2P sites are unimpressed with the empty threats.

Although MediaDefender president Randy Saaf was eager to tell us a fabricated cover story after the MiiVi incident, MediaDefender has not responded to our numerous requests for comment this week. Similarly, the New York General Attorney’s office has declined to provide a response to our inquiries. MediaDefender has, however, contacted several popular P2P sites, including isoHunt, which provided us with a complete record.

“Despite security precautions by our client, a person or persons illegally accessed MediaDefender’s email and other files,” says a cease and desist notice sent to isoHunt and seen by Ars. In the notice—which cites various sections of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, the Electronic Communications Privacy Act, and the California Computer Data Access and Fraud Act—SMR&H attorney Robert S. Gerber requests that isoHunt “immediately and permanently cease and desist from posting, distributing or otherwise making available MediaDefender’s trade secrets and confidential information.”

The popular P2P site’s formal response to SMR&H is filled with caustic wit and considerable legal expertise. “If Mr. Gerber is truly as experienced in IP law as his bio claims he is,” asks the isoHunt administrator in his response, “why is it that he is incapable of composing a DMCA takedown notice as per USC Title 17 Section 512?” The isoHunt administrator explains that Gerber failed to adequately specify the allegedly infringing content as required by law. The administrator also helpfully provides a link to a valid sample complaint so that SMR&H will be less likely to send the improper information in their second attempt. The following is an excerpt of the isoHunt administrator’s response:

“This e-mail serves as a counter notification under USC Title 17 Section 512 (c)(3)(A)(iii) that you have failed to properly identifying links to content that allegedly infringes your copyright/trademark/rights (or, in this case, has something to do with really embarrassing trade secrets *and* employee social security numbers) AND you have failed to address your e-mail to the appropriate agent, namely copyright@isohunt.com, so I invite you and your clients to take a long walk off a short pier, since you and/or your clients might actually manage to NOT get something that simple wrong.”

In closing, the isoHunt administrator says that the he will comply with the request if it is properly submitted. “Despite us being located in Canada, if you do actually figure out how to compose a valid DMCA notice, we will honor it,” he concedes, “just as soon as we’re done laughing at you.”

Torrent site Meganova received an identical letter from SMR&H, but responded publicly and with a bit less civility. “Dearest little asstunnels, Let me start off by thanking you for your pitiful attempt to have your e-mails removed from the entire internet,” Meganova’s response says. “In case you haven’t noticed, this site is located in Europe (I hope you can point it out on a map) where your stupid copyright claims have no base. But fair is fair you guys did suffer over the past week so here’s bit of advice to you guys: F*** you! F*** you again! F*** you again and again and again!” (I’m guessing that an “asstunnel” is what you get when a European whose first language isn’t English tries to say “asshole.” It seemed awkward when I first read the response, but the expression has since grown on me.)

A web site named after the organization behind the leak, MediaDefender-Defenders, has set up HTML archive that includes all of the e-mails, largely uncensored, but with minor modifications to protect MediaDefender employees from identity theft. The site also published an e-mail allegedly sent by Saaf himself. “I am the CEO of MediaDefender,” the message says. “We have begun our civil and criminal investigations into the stolen e-mails from our company. We are meeting with the FBI on monday. Your IP address has been logged. I hope it was worth the thrill.”

The site has been running intermittently since its launch, and the disruptions are thought to be the result of massive traffic coupled with a denial of service attack apparently launched by MediaDefender.

Attempting to stop the spread of the e-mails is an exercise in futility at this point. MediaDefender’s entire business model has been based on recognition of the inescapable fact that litigation cannot stop the spread of content on the Internet, so it is ironic that the company has turned to legal threats. In the past, we have seen attempts to stifle the dissemination of information on the Internet backfire and compel activists to promote broader distribution. Given that reality, MediaDefender might want to lay off of the threats for the time being.

    ** Edit: 9.21.07 @ 5:52a **

“I wonder how many people never cheated on a test throughout school whether it be elementary, high school, or college…or plagiarized while doing a report..or cheated on a girlfriend, boyfriend or spouse. I bet that 1% of people have never cheated. Many people have cheated a couple times in high school…does that mean they should have their diploma taken away? I personally saw about 50% of my classmates cheat in one way or another…whether it was writing on the hand, programming answers into a graphing calculator, or glancing at someone else’s test…do you brand them cheaters forever? How many people have lied to their boss about being sick to get a day off? Are they to be branded a liar forever? I personally can’t judge him for cheating because I’m not perfect and that would make me a hypocrite, and I believe that anyone who has cheated but demand for belichick to be lynched is a hypocrite.”

While I don’t condone what they’ve done, the fact of the matter is they’ve been punished for it. All teams in the NFL cheat, they all do. Some might not be as brazen as the Pats, but if you’ve been watching ESPN J. Johnson, Madden, etc. Hall of Fame coaches, have admitted to rampant sign stealing.

  • spiderman3
How many of you have watched Spiderman 3… because if you haven’t, none of this is relevant to you. In which case, there are some shiny videos below that should entertain you for the relatively short time that you’re here. Anyways, lets get started – since I recently saw the movie again. The character in question is Mary Jane Watson, played by Kirsten Dunst. mjspiderman3Who, since the first movie, has been nothing short of a bitch.

Lets face it, she’s not very sympathetic when she knows (since the first film might I add) that Peter has feelings for her and she ends up going out with Flash/Harry. What does our hero get for saving her life twice? a sequel where she is engaged to the son of Daily Bugle’s J. Jonah Jameson. Oh, did I forget to mention that Peter saves her ungrateful life again? well, he does. Towards the final sequence of the second film, she tries to return Peter’s unrequited love… by stabbing Astronaut John Jameson in the heart by standing him up at the wedding. Her intentions were pure, one would hope, but her execution is about as smooth as watching a film feature Devon Aoki.

jameskirstenspideryman3 The third film is where her true bitch comes out. Not just because Harry, played by James Franco, manipulated and coerced her into hurting Peter. So she breaks up with our hero which is perfectly fine, except she has the audacity to still give her input as if she was on intimate terms with him. You know what I’m talking about, the bar/club scene where Peter takes Gwen Stacey and dances with her. If they were together she’d have every right to be mad but they’re not. The whole ordeal makes about as much sense as Michael Jackson’s goofy ass at a Chuck E. Cheese. Another fine example of how being a super hero is a thankless job…

This all went better in my head but I wanted to rush it down, just in case I forgot.

Earth Deemed Unsafe; God Sued For Negligence

EUGENE, Oreg. (CAP) – The Environmental Law Alliance Worldwide has filed a lawsuit in federal court against the Creator of all humanity, claiming gross negligence following the collapse of a mine in Huntington, Utah that trapped six miners some 1,500 feet below ground and killed three rescue workers.

“It is our stance that as a direct result of the actions of God, certain areas of Earth are unsafe and have led directly or indirectly to the deaths of human beings,” said ELAW spokesman Trent Xavier. “We will not be satisfied until there is a conviction in this case.”

The 36-page lawsuit alleges that the epoxy used by God to manufacture much of the ground that comprises the Earth falls short of federal guidelines for safety and the locations should be shut down until appropriate repairs can be made. The lawsuit draws on a two-year study that concluded the epoxy is nothing more than a combination of water and dirt.

“Is this how we ensure the safety of our families and our children, with dried mud?” asked environmental activist Robert Forestal. “To say this is piss-poor design is an insult to urination. What’s next, Title VIII housing in sand castles?”

ELAW, working with US Attorney Karin J. Immergut, is seeking up to $500 million in exchange for releasing God from criminal culpability and civil liability for past defects, including cracks in the ground, leaks in tunnels, and uneven surfaces beneath bridges.

“We understand the design is fairly old,” said Xavier. “But as engineer and chief architect, it is God’s job to make a clear distinction between the relative capability of his standard and economy formulations. He has failed to do that.”

Lawyers for God have thus far refused comment. However, they have already filed a motion for change of venue to have the case heard in Kingdom Come. A judge has not yet ruled on the motion.

    Scrap scalping laws.

I’M NOT a sports fan; never have been. Maybe that’s why all the atmospherics surrounding ticket scalping raise more questions in my mind than they answer.

For example: Why is someone who sells tickets to a Red Sox fan outside Fenway Park for a heavily inflated price called a “scalper,” while someone who charges the same fan $4 for a bottle of water inside the stadium is called a “concessionaire”?

Another question, admittedly not germane to the transaction itself: How can people who shudder with revulsion when Atlanta Braves fans do the “tomahawk chop,” or who find Chief Wahoo, the Cleveland Indians’ cheerful emblem, politically offensive, refer so disdainfully to the resale of tickets as “scalping”?

But what I really don’t understand about the scalping brouhaha is why anyone thinks the government should be involved in deciding how much a willing buyer can pay a willing seller for tickets to a lawful entertainment event. We all take it for granted that if you’re willing to pay for the privilege, you can stay at the best hotel, live in the best neighborhood, eat at the best restaurant, or hire the best lawyer. So what accounts for the heavy breathing when some fans pay a premium in order to see Daisuke Matsuzaka take the mound or watch David Beckham bend it with the L.A. Galaxy? Or — this isn’t only about sports — to hear Beyoncé sing “Irreplaceable” or catch a sold-out “Wicked” on Broadway?

Actually, around the country much of the heavy breathing has been subsiding. On Aug. 1, Minnesota dumped an antiscalping law dating back to 1913, enabling ticket-reselling scofflaws to finally come out of the shadows. “This country was built on free trade and now I have to worry about more competition,” scalper Michael Stratton told the Minneapolis Star Tribune. “But I don’t have to worry about my daughters seeing me handcuffed.”

In New York, too, consenting adults can now publicly engage in supply and demand. A bill signed by Governor Eliot Spitzer in June largely deregulated the resale of tickets to theatres, concerts, and sporting events. “Ticket scalping laws historically have not worked,” Spitzer said. “I think permitting a free market to work its magic there is the smart approach.”

They think the same thing in Florida, which repealed its antiscalping law last year, and in Illinois, which embraced the free market in 2005, and in Connecticut, where reselling tickets at a profit will become legit this October.

All told, 42 states have decided that the heavens won’t collapse if people who own tickets to games and shows are free to sell them for whatever the market will bear — as free as people who own real estate, shares of stock, Beanie Babies, or just about anything else. Last week, abandoning its irrational bias against scalping, Major League Baseball announced a five-year agreement with StubHub, a leading online reseller of tickets to entertainment events. Teams will recommend StubHub to fans who want to sell their tickets or buy some from other fans; in return, MLB will collect a share of StubHub’s revenue.

Here in the People’s Republic of Massachusetts, however, a free market in tickets is still just a fantasy. For months, state legislators have been making noises about scrapping the state’s archaic antiscalping law, under which tickets may not be resold for more than $2 above face value. But while Beacon Hill dithers, Boston’s mayor and police department have launched a holy war against ticket resellers, 21 of whom have been arrested near Fenway Park so far this year. Most of those arrested have been charged with not one, not two, but three crimes — ticket scalping, occupying a street for the resale of tickets, and unregistered hawking and peddling — for which the combined penalty can be as much as $800 and a year in prison.

With 45 murders in Boston so far this year — five in the past week alone — it seems more than a little crazy to be siccing police officers on harmless ticket-sellers.

But even if Boston were as safe as Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, treating scalpers as criminals would serve no public benefit. Price controls — whether on gasoline, medical care, or baseball tickets — are never a smart idea. They invariably distort the market, frustrate consumers, encourage hoarding, and lead to shortages. Letting buyers and sellers sort things out in a free market is the best way to keep the supply of any commodity available at a fair price.

Want to see the Red Sox at Yankee Stadium later this month? As of yesterday, StubHub had tickets for as little as $26 apiece. I may not be a sports fan, but that doesn’t sound like “scalping” to me.

    Not Green with envy.
I think it’s great that players from Boston aren’t bitter about being traded away to other teams. The fact that even the younger players (Al Jefferson, Ryan Gomes and Gerald Green (via Kevin Garnett trade)) seem to be able to appreciate the beginning they had and realize that the decision made was both a business decision and one that would make the team better speaks volumes about the content of their character.

    Quote:
By the way, there are no hard feelings over the trade from this close-knit family.

“Tell the Boston fans that we appreciate them, we love them, and we think they’re the best fans in the world,” said Gerald Sr., a retired Houston firefighter. “And we tip our hats to Danny (Ainge) and Doc (Rivers). We respect what they’ve done, and what they had to do.
“If I was in that position, I’d trade for Kevin Garnett myself. I hope banner No. 17 is on the way for them. But right now Gerald has an opportunity, he has a pulse, and as long as you have a pulse, you can go on.”

10 Health Benefits related to Water!

The human body is made up of 60-65% water (lean people have more water in their bodies mainly due to the fact that muscles hold more water than fat).

More researchers recommend 8 glasses of water a day in order to maintain our health, but sometimes this quantity might vary depending on life-style, nutrition, environment temperature, humidity, etc. The human body needs so much water because almost every cell in our body need water to function properly.

easilydistractedbyshinyobjects Still, if you think that the human body accumulates daily 2 liters of water, think again! Our lungs expel daily about 3 cups of water through normal breathing, if we perspire we eliminate two cups of water a day (not including exercises), etc. Some of us prefer soft drinks to water. In this case we should bear in mind that sugar slows down the absorption of fluids into the body. Additionally, such drinks contain calories that might sometimes make the difference between weight loss and weight gain.

Besides drinking water, another important method of increasing water intake in our bodies is eating food with a high content of water. Such sources of water are fruits and vegetables.

The top 5 fruits with one of the highest content of water are:

    1. Watermelon (92% water)
    2. Strawberries (92% water)
    3. Grapefruits (91% water)
    4. Cantaloupe (90% water)
    5. Peaches (88% water)

Additionally, the top 5 vegetables with one of the highest content of water are:

    1. Lettuce (96% water)
    2. Cucumber (96% water)
    3. Celery (95% water)
    4. Radish (95% water)
    5. Zucchini (95% water)

If drinking water is not that easy for you, here are some tips that will make it easier for you to drink water:

      1. Drink less but more often (every two hours drink a cup of water, take water with you in the car, when you watch TV, etc.)
      2. Include some natural flavors in your glasses of water
      3. Use ice, lemons, straws, etc.
      4. Use colorful containers
      5. Drink cold water (it might taste better)
      6. Replace soda with water at lunch
      7. Drink a glass of water before you eat (recommended especially when you are trying to loss weight, as water decreases your appetite)

Additionally, for those who think that drinking less water means less kg on the scale, we should bear in mind that the more water we consume, the less we retain, because a clean inner body works more effectively.

Water consumption has a lot of health benefits. There is not a single diet in the world that restricts water consumption.

The most important 10 health related benefits of water consumption are:

    1. External benefits: additional moisture for our skin, prevents the aging process, a more fit body, etc.

    2. Headaches: 75% of our brain is made of water. So, when the body has a water deficit, the brain will be the one of the first who will signal the problem, causing headaches. When drinking alcohol, although some might not recommend, water might be the solution to get back in shape because it eliminates toxins and re-hydrates the brain.

    3. Back pains: are often caused by fluid deficits in our bodies. The disks within our backs are filled with fluids, mainly water, and act like shock absorbers. Regular movement and a proper fluid level will keep these disks hydrated and will allow them to support the weight of the upper body.

Usually, the fluid inside the disks support 75% of the weight, while the shell supports 25% of it. When the fluid level drops, the shell is forced to support a higher weight level, causing pains and other problems.

    4. Reduces infections: The lymphatic systems in our body is responsible for waste disposal. This system breaks down toxins before passing them into the blood stream.

A low intake of water will disturb the flow of lymph in our systems, making our bodies less resistant to dangerous infections.

    5. Hypertension often occurs when the human body is trying to adjust to blood volume loss. Our blood is almost 85% water, so its volume depends a lot of the water intake.

When the body detects a drop in the blood volume, it closes less active capillary beds in order to maintain active areas proper fueled with blood. When vessels close, they cause an tension increase in the muscles. So, water helps by increasing the blood volume and thus, reducing tension.

    6. Concentration: water is used to flush out toxins contained by certain food products (preservatives, additives, etc.). By drinking water, these toxins are flushed quickly from the liver, making you more active and increasing your concentration capacity.

    7. Arthritis: water is used to lubricate joints between our bones. When water intake is low, the friction between cartilage surfaces increases, causing swellings, pains, etc.

    8. Breath: bad breath is a clear sign that your body needs more water. Our saliva helps the cleaning process of our teeth of bacteria and keeps our tongue hydrated.

    9. Cramps: oxygen is transported to our muscles by blood. If the blood is not properly oxygenated, muscles create lactic acid causing cramps. By drinking water we make sure that our blood is fueled with oxygen.

    10. Other important benefits: asthma, digestion, fluid retention, morning sickness, etc.

There are many other benefits of drinking water. A proper hydrated body is a more healthy and resistant body!!!

Resident Evil 5 trailer has sparked controversy of racist hate mongering. The problem is depicting black people as inhuman savages. Concerns over the trailer, where Chris Redfield garbed in military clothing, is seen destroying a village, killing black people. While the mistaken idea can be given validity to a certain extent, zombie stories originated from afro-caribbean vodoun belief system and exploring the game’s main antagonist, zombies, origins of zombie mythology. If anything, this teaches us that no matter what the race… be it white zombies in mansion (RE1), in a police station (RE2) or black zombies in a village… zombies should be killed or avoided at all costs.

    Ethics of Piracy.

Currently I am studying philosophy, and thought why not apply it to the piracy situation we are currently in, as one could say that it is a moral dilemma of a kind, not as bad as euthanasia or abortion (though the movie/music companies would have you believe it is) but it is still one from a personal standpoint for some people.

Philosophically speaking there are 3 main philosophical views which are as follows:

Deontological Ethics – Mostly perpetrated by Immanuel Kant, this theory basically says that humans are to be treated as ends, and not means to an end. It also says that to find if any action is ethical, universalise it (apply it to everything), and if you can do that and the rule still hold, it is ethical.

Utilitarianism – First thought of by Jeremy Bentham and continued by John Stuart Mill this is a simple maths theory. It is based on the fact that an ethical decision is purely based on the amount of people that get the most happiness out of any given decision.

Virtue Theory – Originating back in ancient Greece with Aristotle, and having been tinkered with a few times since, virtue theory basically says that you should look at a persons decisions over a period of a time, not single out a single decision and decide if it is ethical. Ethics is about becoming something greater, rather than just making decisions of right or wrong.

Now I don’t know if many of you have realised this but according to these ethical theories, 2 out of 3 of them say piracy is ethical, I’ll explain further below.

Deontological ethics purely says that piracy is wrong, mainly because we are treating humans as means to an end, and that it is impossible to universalise theft because if everything is stolen, no one owns anything, so nothing can be stolen.

Utilitarianism however says that because the people that get the most out of piracy are consumers, then piracy is the most ethical decision to make. If you think about it though this poses the problem of if everyone pirated then the companies would crash and no products would be made, so a more viable option would be that the higher your income the less ethical it is to pirate.

Finally Virtue Theory is a bit more complex, and the one I think explains piracy best. As it is not purely concerned with you pirating something, it can consider other things you do. For instance if you just sit there downloading movie after movie, never visiting the cinema or renting films, or if you just download music and never by a single album or see an album live, then you are a bad bad person because you are not being supportive. However if you download films/music, but go and see the films in the cinema, or go and see the acts live, then in a way it could be considered that you are actually doing the best thing. The reason this could be is because if you go buy the DVD, see the film in the cinema, and rent it, or go buy the album, each single, and see each performance live, then you submitting to a capitalist regime which only cares about taking as much of your money as possible.

I just thought from looking at it it’s rather funny that ethically speaking, piracy can be the right thing to do, because movie stars, and music stars do not deserve multi million pound/dollar salaries for a job that just entertains when doctors/military/police are considerably underpaid in most countries.

Overall personal piracy does not in the long run really harm anyone if you are still supporting the industries by going to live gigs or going to the cinema often. In the case of live music you are actually giving the artist much more money by seeing them live as the record companies rip them a new asshole with the percentage they take out of every album sold, so unless you are a person who only downloads, or bootleg for financial gain, don’t sweat it as certainly in my eyes you are doing bugger all wrong.
